  • The quest for rocks continues.......in Ohio!

We're off to a pretty good start to wheelin' season so far. Already this year the jeep has seen dirt in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and now Ohio. Soon after our return from the Greenbrier trip Jeff started rallying the gang for the Stillwell Stompers Jamboree in Ohio. I've hard of this event before but was always a little skeptical because well.....its in Ohio. How much rock could be in Ohio? A quick youtube search of last year's event there had me convinced to go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPqn33lNjrw

Several iron city sponsored wrench nights were required to get the rigs in shape including some new fenders for me and a bumper for Jeff. Greg......well his some defies all logic and reason and only required a fidget spinner in preparation. And I even picked up a new tow rig for the trip.

As usual I was running behind and throwing tools and parts into the jeep while Jeff and Greg were already waiting somewhere in WV at the rendezvous point. I quickly made up the time and we continued on. A journey through several small towns and dusty roads led us to the camp spot. I was glad to be in front on the journey as the trailer threw up a cloud of dust consuming the jeeps behind me. We arrived at the old farm around 6:30 and much to our surprise we were some of the first ones there. We staked out a good spot and set up our home for the weekend.

Quickly, we knew we were in for a good time as rigs of all shapes and sizes began rolling in. It was real treat to see a variety of older jeeps arriving. Lately a TJ has been somewhat of a rarity on a ride. Several CJs were present and a variety of Samis and Toyotas were being unloaded. We began to feel anxious and possibly under gunned as a lot of the rigs were big tired and showed obvious signs of trail duty. A diesel 1-ton 4 door stretched CJ set up camp next to us. Quite the unique rig. We ended the night with a few beers around the fire. Save the trees, burn gas!!

Saturday we started out in a group of about 20 rigs. All pretty equally set up on 35-37" tires, lockers, and winches. The property is a chunk of about 3000 privately owned acres in Brinkhaven Ohio. A quick road trip from camp found us immediately on a decent rock trail snaking through the woods. we knew we were in for a good day.

Day 1 included 3 trails. 1 jeep in the group had some breakage which allowed up some time to chat with other jeepers. His somewhat aggressive driving style broke both front joints, and the shaft ears etc.
The trail at the end of the day was quite tough and challenging.

Back at camp for the night we feasted on quite a spread of veggies, fries, and wings. Typical tent camping menu!! We also went over the rigs and added the necessary equipment for the next day's adventure.

One particular trail called 37 Heaven offered a variety of lines to test your navigational skills.

I'm definitely saving a spot on my calendar for this trip next year. It was blast. Trails were great, people were friendly, and its close to home.

We made our way home sunday without much damage to report. A few scrapes and bruises, but mechanically not too bad. Greg and Jeff both have leaky rears that are now on the border of needing a diaper. The flares on my JK finally survived a weekend trip, my skid plates, not so much.

Until next time, try to cash us outside.

So is the 5th wheel/gooseneck going to be deck over or car trailer style? I know a guy that has a triple that you could put a slide in camper on the front.
